KUALA LUMPUR: The family of Vijayalaksmi, an Indian national who went missing in the Jalan Masjid India sinkhole incident, have expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and the search and rescue (SAR) team for their tireless efforts to locate her, Malay language daily Astro Awani reports.
"We, as a family, thank the Malaysian government and the rescue team for wholeheartedly being involved in the search operation," said a family member of Vijayalaksmi.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif also told Astro Awani that the victim's husband, Mathavan, 49, and their son, M. Suria, 25, had conveyed their gratitude to the staff of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) when they were escorted back to KL International Airport (KLIA) for their flight back to India on Sept 1.
Additionally, she told the daily that the victim's family was satisfied with the SAR operation and the prompt steps taken by the Malaysian government.
"They were at the scene throughout the SAR and closely monitored all the movements of the personnel. They were also given briefings on every movement and action taken by the government," she said on Friday (Sept 6).
Maimunah added that apart from DBKL, officers from the Indian High Commission also escorted them to KLIA.
On Aug 23, the 48-year-old woman from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, went missing after falling into an 8m-deep sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India.
Nine days later, after receiving expert advice, the government decided to terminate the SAR operation. The decision to halt the SAR operation was made due to several factors, including safety concerns involving the SAR team members and the ongoing safety issues at the site following several recent sinkhole incidents.
