Two Penang homes damaged in separate fires


GEORGE TOWN: Two homes here were damaged in separate fires on Friday (Sept 6 ) morning.

A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said in the first incident, a distress call came in at 1.09am regarding a fire at a terrace house along Jalan Oldham in Tanjung Bungah.

"A total of 17 firemen with two light fire rapid tender (LFRT) vehicles and one pickup truck from the Bagan Jermal and Lebuh Pantai stations were deployed to the scene immediately," he said.

The spokesman said the fire destroyed about 40% of the house and firemen were still working to extinguish the blaze with the help of the volunteer brigade as of 11am.

In the second incident, an emergency call was received at 6.07am about a unit at Padang Tembak Flats in Taman Ayer Hitam.

The spokesman said 27 firemen from the Paya Terubong, Lebuh Pantai and Jalan Perak stations were deployed.

"The second fire involved a flat on the third floor. About 50% of the unit was engulfed in flames," he added.

It is learnt that the fire at the Padang Tembak Flats caused a massive traffic jam with curious motorists stopping to take a look.

The spokesman added that no one was injured in either incident.
