BANGI: Bukit Aman has penalised over 1,800 police personnel since 2023 for wrongdoings, says Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
He said that disciplinary action had been taken against 631 personnel and officers between Jan and July of this year.
"Of the total, the employment of 36 of them has been terminated," he told a press conference after attending the Student Police Volunteer Corps (Suksis) graduation ceremony at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on Saturday (Sept 7).
He said that in 2023, disciplinary action was taken against 1,238 officers and personnel and that 139 of them were fired.
"Their offences vary from extortion, drug abuse and being in cahoots with syndicates," he said and added that any wrongdoings committed by those in the police force will not be swept under the rug.
"In fact, when I was the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director, we took action against a state NCID chief and other senior officers for various criminal offences. Their employment was terminated," he said.
Ayob Khan said various initiatives have and will be taken to uphold integrity in the police force.
"Officers from the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department are always going to the ground to perform inspections. We are also profiling personnel and officers who live lavishly and beyond their means as well," he said.
Supervisors in the police force are also being held accountable if their subordinates commit any wrongdoing due to lack of supervision, he said.
"It is in accordance with Rule 3C of the Public Officer regulations. Our actions (against wrongdoing) are ongoing and consistent," he said.
