KOTA KINABALU: Tourism for Sabah and Sarawak can flourish more if both states continue working together to promote attraction in Borneo, says Datuk Christina Liew.
The Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said the ongoing strong collaboration between Sabah and Sarawak in promoting Borneo as Malaysia’s Favourite Destination is a great initiative for both states.
"By working together, we can enhance the visibility of our diverse offerings in Sabah, from our breathtaking landscapes and thrilling adventures to our rich cultural heritage and unique wildlife encounters, thereby attracting more visitors to our shores," she said.
Liew said this at the official opening of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), in Kuala Lumpur, Saturday (Sept 7).
The event showcases Borneo as Malaysia's favourite destination, represented by the captivating states of Sabah and Sarawak.
“Tourism is not just about promoting destinations as it is also about building connections and creating memories,” she said.
Liew explained that Sabah, with its rich tapestry of culture, adventure, and nature, offers an integrated experience that takes visitors from the majestic peaks of Mount Kinabalu to the vibrant marine life in its oceans.
“We want every visitor to feel the heart and soul of Sabah through our curated experiences and warm hospitality,” she said.
Earlier, she said the MATTA Fair has always been a significant platform for Sabah to promote tourism, with this year being no exception.
Liew said the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) was happy to lead this effort, alongside 33 travel agents, local artisans, and industry partners, with a strong presence of 60 booths under the Sabah Zone.
The Kopitiam-themed zone will bring a taste of Sabah's hospitality, with traditional treats, aromatic Tenom coffee, and refreshing Sabah tea, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in our local experiences.
"As we continue to grow and evolve in the tourism landscape, Sabah's participation at Matta Fair underlines our commitment to providing visitors with authentic and unforgettable experiences.
"This Fair serves as a gateway for travel enthusiasts to discover the beauty of Borneo, and I am confident that the exclusive deals and promotions we have prepared will inspire many to explore Sabah," Liew said.
This year, visitors to the Sabah booths can enjoy special promotions, including travel rebates of up to RM150 on any Sabah packages.
These incentives, she said, were designed to make it easier for travellers to plan their next adventure to Sabah and experience all that the state had to offer.
Liew commended the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), led by chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, for their dedication and innovative approach in showcasing Sabah at this Matta Fair.
"Their efforts in promoting our local products and creating a unique experience for visitors truly set us apart,” she said, adding Sabah was committed to promoting tourism that not only showcases its natural beauty but also supports local businesses and preserves cultural heritage.
"I am happy about the opportunities that lie ahead for Sabah and Sarawak. Let us all work harder to promote our beautiful region, our vibrant culture, and our welcoming spirit to the world,” she said.
Liew said together, Sabah and Sarawak can make Borneo a must-visit destination for travellers from near and far.
