JOHOR BARU: Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) will not be fielding a candidate for the Mahkota by-election, says its Johor chairman Mohd Azrol Ab Rahanin.
Muda, he said, had decided to instead focus on strengthening its grassroots and rejuvenating the party.
"Following meetings at the Johor Muda committee and central executive committee levels, we have decided not to contest in the Mahkota by-election.
"For now, Johor Muda has chosen to focus on our tours across all districts in the state as part of our efforts to strengthen the grassroots and rejuvenate the party," he said in a statement here on Thursday (Sept 12).
"Johor Muda will continue to provide checks and balances on local issues which impact the people and stress the importance of empowering the people's voice through Muar MP (Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman) and Puteri Wangsa assemblyman (Amira Aisya Abd Aziz)," he said.
So far, two parties have officially announced that they would be contesting in the by-election.
Barisan Nasional has chosen Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah as their candidate for the state seat while former footballer Mohamad Haizan Jaafar is Perikatan Nasional's choice.
The Mahkota state seat became vacant when its assemblyman, Umno's Sharifah Azizah, passed away on Aug 2, three days after she was hospitalised.
Nomination day for candidates is on Sept 14 and polling has been set for Sept 28.
