Archbishop urges all to celebrate Malaysia Day

KUCHING: The coming Malaysia Day celebration will provide an opportunity for the people to join hands in unity, says the Kuching Roman Catholic church.

Urging Malaysians to go beyond slogans, Archbishop Simon Poh said the focus should be on unity and nation-building.

“Let us truly be one people of Malaysia, celebrating our unity and diversity, mutual acceptance and respect for all religions, races and cultures,” he said in his Malaysia Day message yesterday.

Archbishop Poh said the country’s unity in diversity was reflected in the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma) hosted by Sarawak, which brought together various cultures and ethnicities.

“I believe what captured the hearts of Malaysians is that Sukma celebrated our unity and friendship, giving due respect to various cultural traditions and also honouring our young athletes,” he said.

“Let the theme ‘Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka’ become a reality, symbolising the integration of Malaysians from various cultures and ethnicities,” the archbishop added.
