KUALA LUMPUR: A drug syndicate was busted with the seizure of more than RM5mil worth of drugs following several raids in the city.
Three men were detained in the course of the raids, which were conducted on Sept 11.
Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin said police arrested the first suspect - 30-year-old man - at a parking lot of a luxury condominium.
"We seized 182.9g of methamphetamine after inspecting his sling bag.
"We believe he works as a storekeeper for the syndicate.
"He then directed the police to a condominium unit where we detained a 33-year-old man believed to be a drug runner," he told a press conference at the KL police headquarters on Friday (Sept 13).
Comm Khaw said an array of drugs were seized from the condominium unit including 112.23kg of methamphetamine, 29.06kg of cannabis, 7.51kg of ecstasy pills and 6.07kg of MDMA.
"The drugs are worth about RM5.88mil," he said.
The third suspect, a 30-year-old man, was detained on the same day at a restaurant in the city, he said.
"We believe he was also a drug runner," he said.
Comm Khaw said the syndicate has been operating for more than six months.
"We believe they got their drug supply from a neighbouring country.
"We are investigating all aspects including whether those detained were part of an underground gang," he said.
The drugs seized could have been supplied to 660,500 addicts, he said.
"We also seized two cars and RM750 cash," he said.
Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate paid a monthly rent of RM2,000 for the condominium unit, Comm Khaw said.
"The storekeeper was paid a monthly salary of RM5,000 while the runners were paid between RM3,000 and RM5,000 a month.
"All three suspects have been remanded until Sept 18," he said.
All suspects tested negative for drugs, he added.
"We will conduct further investigation to uncover the remnants of the syndicate, including the mastermind," he said.
He also hoped the public will supply relevant information to the police.
