Muslims must ensure Islam is not misrepresented, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: It is incumbent upon Muslims to actively propagate the message of truth, ensuring that Islam is not misrepresented, either by its detractors or by extremists within the faith itself, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that Islam has long been subjected to negative portrayals, a phenomenon evident in the rise of Islamophobia over the past few decades.

“While the growth of Islamophobia in the West is undoubtedly concerning, it is even more distressing to witness attempts to undermine Islam within Malaysia itself.

“Our nation stands at a crossroads. On one side, we face Islamophobia – whenever Islam is mentioned, there are those who react negatively.

“What harm is there in Jakim offering guidance to the government? Some have raised objections, claiming that Islamic initiatives are being used to incite the public.

“On the other side, we confront individuals who seek to sow discord among Muslims, portraying others as malevolent and oppressive.

“These are people who deem themselves superior, believing they are flawless while the rest of us are condemned. We must rise above this absurdity,” Anwar asserted.

The Prime Minister said this in his speech at Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan on Saturday (Sept 14) during the Huffaz 24K Assembly ceremony here.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Majlis Amanah Rakyat Chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

In his address, Anwar called upon the Huffaz, students who have committed the Quran to memory, to champion the message of truth and remain impervious to negative narratives.

He stressed the importance of those with profound Islamic knowledge, such as the Huffaz, in conveying the authentic teachings of the religion.

“Do not be swayed by Western perspectives that vilify Islam to the extent of equating us to (terrorist organisation) Isis.

“My dear Huffaz, you must embrace the true essence of Islam. Reject those who incite hatred and who are quick to brand others.

“Your mission is to carry forth the genuine message of Islam. Continue to pray for the prosperity of us all and for the safety of our nation.

“It is absurd that we cannot even speak about Islam, Gaza, Islamic programmes, or Jakim without facing criticism,” Anwar added.

Addressing claims that certain members of his government are anti-Islam, Anwar firmly reassured the public that this was not the case.

“Whenever there is a proposal to approve allocations for our Huffaz students, every member of the Cabinet has consistently provided their full support.

“My Cabinet is composed of individuals from diverse religious backgrounds, and not once has anyone objected. They have always supported the approval of allocations for Islamic programmes,” he stated.

Furthermore, Anwar assured the Huffaz that the government would continue to support their future endeavours, highlighting the potential of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a way forward.

“We do not want our Huffaz to be left behind. I have instructed all ministries to ensure that our Huffaz are given opportunities within TVET.

“While becoming a Huffaz is your primary goal, obtaining technical and vocational education can secure your future,” he said.
