PAS may allow non-Muslim associate membership

JERANTUT: PAS is expected to make several amendments to its constitution at its ongoing 70th Muktamar (annual assembly), which may include allowing non-Muslims to join the Islamist party as associate members.

The party’s Mursyidul Am (spiritual leader) Datuk Hashim Jasin (pic) said the proposed amendments would be tabled at the assembly tomorrow to be debated and passed.

“The constitutional amendment involves several points because non-Muslims have been asking to join the party as regular members, but the party only accepts Muslims as members.

“That’s why we have the DHPP (the PAS Non-Muslim Supporters Congress) ... this is what we want to amend (to allow the non-Muslims to be associate members),” Hashim told Bernama after opening the PAS Dewan Ulama Assembly at Kompleks Imam Syafie’ Kampung Temin here yesterday. Also in attendance was the head of PAS Dewan Ulama, Datuk Ahmad Yahaya.

The 70th PAS Mustamar began at the Al-Makmur Complex in Kerdau, Temerloh, on Wednesday, and ends tomorrow.

At the 63rd muktamar of PAS’ Dewan Ulama, Ahmad said the clerics will focus on strengthening the unity of the ummah by outlining three main pillars in line with the theme of this year’s muktamar, “Unity is the Foundation of Strength”.

He said the first focus is “Political Unity Drives Transformation of the Ummah”, which involves uniting the political stance of Muslims under one banner after a long period of division.

The second focus is “Unity Based on Intellectualism and Knowledge”, where PAS Dewan Ulama takes the lead in promoting Islamic intellectual discourse to society.

“The third focus is ‘Unity in Upholding Religious Educational Institutions’. The Dewan Ulama must elevate the status of religious education institutions in their respective areas, nurture religious studies, and attract as many people as possible to engage in religious education,” he said in his keynote address at the Dewan Ulama muktamar yesterday.

At the event, delegates called for the strengthening of the unity of the ummah, with Pahang delegate Roslan Md Esa calling on Muslims to set aside disagreements and extreme attitudes that could lead to slander.

Selangor delegate Mohd Zubir Embong said Dewan Ulama must intensify efforts to enhance unity among the ummah in facing various challenges, such as “mental colonisation” by secularism and liberalism.
