KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans should be cautious about certain groups fanning campaigns against "Malaya parties" contesting the state election, as this could disrupt the nation's unity, says Sabah Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
He said fanning sentiments to get people to oppose peninsular-based parties contesting in Sabah elections could spark hatred and affect the state's existing unity.
Bung Moktar advised Sabahans not to destroy unity just because of different views, ideologies, and political beliefs.
"Political leaders should set an example by fostering the values of unity, goodwill, and the spirit of togetherness.
"What is disappointing, lately there is a resurgence of certain voices from some individual political leaders were openly fanning the flames of hatred including ‘Anti Parti Malaya’ to prevent Peninsular Malaysia parties from competing in the state election," he said after attending a National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations by kindergartens under Kemas in the Kinabatangan district on Saturday (Sept 14).
Bung Moktar said that leaders who want to build a united nation should be agents of national unity and spread the message of unity.
"We are a democratic country, so there is no issue about whether a local or national party contests the election. There should be no statements against any party wanting to contest and intend to govern this state again," the Sabah Umno chief said.
Bung Moktar said that not only Umno but other national parties have gained a foothold in Sabah, and they are even part of the government today, which is led by Sabahans themselves.
"This country was built based on togetherness through the social contract that has brought independence. In uniting the people of this country who are made up of various races, religions, ethnicities and cultures, previous leaders supported national integration rather than assimilation," he said.
Bung Moktar said all Malaysians must value unity and diversity in their daily lives.
He said everyone should preserve and practice unity and harmony among all Malaysians and learn from dark experiences triggered by the race riots of May 1969.
