AN attack by a wild sun bear that led to a man’s death in Gua Musang, Kelantan, has shocked villagers, Harian Metro reported.

Muhamad Zaki Che Mohamed, 33, was attacked by the bear last Sunday and was admitted to the intensive care unit of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian.

However, he succumbed to injuries early Saturday.

Villagers of Kampung Dalam Senduk said this was the first time such an incident had happened and were concerned about it.

“The villagers are worried and afraid to go out to tap rubber or even go to the orchard,” said villager Che Rohana Che Deraman, 52.

“We have come across wild animals, such as bears and tigers, but have never been attacked.

“It has been a week since the incident. We don’t even dare to go to the orchard.

“We are also very sad over the man’s death,” she said.

Another villager Mat Nor Mamat, 64, hoped the sun bear would be caught soon.

“I have been living in this village for 44 years, and I have never heard of anyone being attacked by a wild animal.

“Last year, there were sun bears seen behind a villager’s home.

“I hope the authorities will catch the bear because we are worried about our safety,” he added.

> Villagers of Kampung Bukit Putus in Gunung Semanggol in Bagai Serai, Perak, are worried about certain superstitious rituals that have made a comeback in the area, Utusan Malaysia reported.

The discovery was made after several items were discovered in a small cave by the roadside near the village.

Among them were pineapples and flowers.

Residents also noticed several candles lit at 7pm everyday.
