Four seriously hurt in double-decker bus crash

IPOH: Four passengers were seriously injured while 19 others, including three children, suffered light injuries after the double-decker bus they were travelling in crashed into a divider along the North-South Expressway.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the injured were sent to Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun following the incident at about 12.15am yesterday.

He said the accident, which occurred at KM273 southbound of the expressway, happened after the driver, 56, was believed to have lost control of the vehicle.

“Initial investigation found that the bus was on its way to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Kuala Lumpur from Sungai Nibong, Penang.

“The vehicle was in the left lane prior to the accident.

“The driver and 11 other passengers were unharmed in the incident,” he said in a statement, adding that the youngest passenger was one while the oldest was 73.

ACP Abang Zainal Abidin said the case was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.

“We urged witnesses of the incident to go to the nearest police station or contact investigating officer Insp Muhammad Syafiq Fauze at 013-671 3177,” he added.

Meanwhile, Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said firemen had found three of the seriously injured passengers on the lower deck of the bus.
