Call for laws to protect health workers from bullying

KOTA KINABALU: There should be a channel for medical practitioners to report on workplace bullying, Parti Warisan information chief Datuk Azis Jamman suggests.

“A safe reporting system should be in place to create an anonymous reporting channel for health workers facing any forms of bullying or pressure without fear of retaliation,” he said.

The suggestion came after the death of Dr Tay Tien Yaa, who headed the Chemical Pathology Unit of Hospital Lahad Datu on Aug 29, following alleged workplace bullying.

Azis also called on the Health Ministry to create a system to monitor and evaluate the workload and stress faced by medical personnel.

“Periodic evaluation of the work system should be done to ensure that it does not burden the workers,” he said in a statement.

Azis pointed out that psychological support and counselling should be provided to healthcare workers facing work stress.

“The government could also review and include specific laws to protect health workers from workplace bullying,” he said.

Azis, who extended Warisan condolences to the family of Dr Tay, hoped that her death would be thoroughly investigated.

“Dr Tay’s death is not only a great loss to her family and friends, but also the people of Sabah and the nation’s healthcare sector,” he added.
