KUALA LUMPUR: Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB), already under scrutiny for allegedly operating illegal welfare homes, is now being investigated as an organised crime syndicate, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
While he did not provide further details, it is believed the investigation aims to determine whether the company was structured to profit from donations and funding, under the pretence of operating welfare homes for orphans.
Razarudin stated that GISB executive chairman and CEO Datuk Nasiruddin Mohd Ali is among those who will be summoned for questioning as part of the investigation.
In response to Nasiruddin’s recent statement criticising the police action against the company’s 20 welfare homes as excessive, Razarudin stated that with clear evidence of wrongdoing at the premises, the police had no obligation to consult any party before taking action.
“Can we hold discussions and give advice with all the evidence we have?
“If this is the case, then if a house is robbed and we identify the perpetrator, can we discuss the case with the criminal and settle the matter with him? Is this how we have taken action all this time?” asked Razarudin.
“When there are crimes involving sexual assaults against children and human trafficking, is it necessary for us to discuss it first?
“He (Nasiruddin) claimed that he had held discussions with the police, but I am unaware of what it was about as it was not with me or with the CID director (Datuk Seri Shuhaily Mohd Zain).”
Razarudin said apart from the criminal elements in the case, police investigations will also look into other aspects, including the legality of the child care centres.
Initial investigations, he added, showed that none of the female children were victims of sexual crimes and none of those arrested in the operation have past run-ins with the law.
Joining the press conference at Pulapol in Kuala Lumpur yesterday were Jakim deputy director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee, along with senior officials from the Health Ministry and Social Welfare Department.
