KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) is introducing smart meters as part of its initiative to improve electricity supply services in the state and Labuan.
“The initiative aims to offer more efficient energy usage while improving service quality for consumers,” said SESB chief executive officer, Mohd Yaakod Jaafar.
He added that the smart meters will empower consumers to monitor and manage their electricity consumption, helping them optimise usage and reduce costs.
"These meters will allow consumers to plan their monthly electricity usage and set a budget. Notifications will be sent when their usage approaches the set limit, helping users stay within their target," Yaakod explained.
This initiative is part of SESB's broader goal to support the government's push for a digital economy, enabling smarter energy management for consumers.
The smart meter project will be rolled out in phases, with Phase 1 focusing on the installation of 6,497 units.
Initially, 60 units will be installed during a two-month trial to ensure system and billing accuracy.
Large Power Consumers and feed-in tariff (FiT) account holders will be among the first to benefit from the upgrade.
"After successful completion of the trial, the remaining 6,437 units will be deployed," he added.
Phase 2 of the project, set for 2025, will extend to domestic users in Kota Kinabalu and Labuan, further expanding access to smart energy solutions across the region.
This initiative marks a significant step towards improving the reliability and quality of power supply while aligning with SESB's sustainability goals.
