TASEK GELUGOR: A grandmother bravely waded through floodwaters while carrying her two grandchildren as they vacated their flooded home in Lahar Yooi.
Robiyah Rashid, 54, recalled how floodwaters rose rapidly to the waist level.
Her only concern then was the safety of her two granddaughters, aged two and six.
“It had been raining since morning, but I never expected the water to enter the house. Around 3pm, the water flowed fast into the house and it quickly became overwhelming. I grabbed my two grandchildren and carried them to a safe place.
“My younger brother, my two children and their wives were all there at the time of the incident.
“However, it was chaotic. We were all focused on saving ourselves and didn’t have time to grab any belongings. We literally left with nothing but the clothes on our backs,” she said at the temporary flood relief centre at SK Lahar Yooi, Bernama reported.
Another flood victim, Robiah Hassim said residents also helped to salvage the electrical appliances of their neighbours who were at work.
However, as floodwaters rose swiftly, they were unable save all the appliances.
“There are 14 houses nearby but we couldn’t save everything because the floodwaters rose so quickly,” she said, adding that her own home was also severely affected by the floods.
Checks around the flooded Tasek Gelugor and several other locations in the Seberang Perai Utara district showed that water levels had not fully receded.
Zakat Pulau Pinang general manager Zaiasmawi Nayan, said the agency will coordinate assistance for the flood victims.
