Perak APM monitoring 110 flood hotspots

IPOH: The Perak Civil Defence Force (APM) is monitoring 110 flood hotspots as it contends with continuous high tides and heavy rain.

Perak APM director Colonel (PA) Rohaizat Hadli said APM conducts regular monitoring through all district operations control centres (PKOD) in the state which are on duty 24 hours a day.

He said more than 1,000 members and officers of APM Perak were prepared to respond to a flood disaster in the state.

"We have also prepared logistics such as four-wheel drive, ambulances as well as various types of boats for us to move in case of continuous rain.

"So far no PPS (temporary evacuation centre) has been opened even though there was continuous rain for almost two hours," he said when contacted on Friday (Sept 20).

Rohaizat assured that Perak is still under control with APM closely monitoring the situation and the coastline including in Manjung, Kerian, Taiping, Larut Matang and Selama as well as villages close to the coastal area.

However, he advised the public to be aware of the current weather conditions by keeping up with the websites or smartphone applications of relevant agencies and departments.

"People should avoid going for picnics in the beach and resort areas for this period," he said.

In addition, he also expected Lower Perak district to gradually recover from high tides on Friday (Sept 20) or Saturday (Sept 21).

Earlier, several areas in the Hilir Perak district were reported to be affected by high tides on Friday (Sept 20), with the main road flooded and cut off.

Hilir Perak District Civil Defence Officer, Captain (PA) Mohd Affindi Ishak said the areas involved include Jalan Mak Intan, Esso Village in Maharajalela Road, and Batu 2 1/2 in Kampung Jeti Pak Ali. Others affected were Lorong Kalat, Lorong Pinang, Jalan Maharajalela and Mile 5 Jalan Teluk Intan-Hutan Melintang.

Mohd Affindi said that the roads that were flooded or cut off involved KM1, Jalan Maharajalela near Sungai Pak Kalong, Jalan Pasar, Selekoh Taisan Batu 5 and Batu 5 Bridge.

"As of 7am this morning, the survey found that the height of the water level was 0.28m with more than 20 houses affected," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Bagan Datuk district civil defence officer, Captain (PA) Mohd Fazly Mohamad Zawawi said a house in Kampung Sungai Dulang and three houses in Kampung Tanah Lalang, apart from 12 houses involving Pekan Sungai Tiang Baroh and Bagan Sungai Tiang in Bagan Datuk were affected by high tides.

He said the high tide in the area occurred from 5.25am to 8.30am with a height of water at 3.5m.

However, he said there was no need to open PPS as river water levels were receding. - BERNAMA
