KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian coastguard is ready to deal with any eventuality in Sabah waters amid the unpredictable weather forecast due to the monsoon transition phase.

Tawau Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Capt Shahrizan Raman said their patrol assets were on standby to respond to incidents at sea.

At the same time, he reminded the maritime community, particularly those in the Tawau east coast district, to increase safety measures while at sea and pay attention to any change in the weather.

He said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had issued a warning that thunderstorms would hit the peninsula and the Sabah west coast from Sept 24 until early November.

“This condition is dangerous to small boats, passenger boat activities and the fisheries industry,” Shahrizan said, on Saturday (Sept 21).

He urged the public to report emergency situations at sea by contacting the Tawau MMEA operations centre at 089-750116 or the Malaysian Emergency Response Services (MERS) 999 number.
