A bedrock of Penang DAP: Hui Ying lauds CM Chow in convention speech

GEORGE TOWN: Chow Kon Yeow's meaningful presence in DAP laid the foundation for the party's formation of the state government in 2008 and kept it in power, recalls Lim Hui Ying.

The Penang DAP secretary said before leading as Penang Chief Minister, Chow had led the party through many challenges and helped them remain in power.

"The presence of Chow in this party has been meaningful, laying a solid foundation so that DAP managed to form the state government in 2008 and maintain power until today," she said in her state DAP Ordinary Convention speech at the Setia Spice Arena on Sunday (Sept 22).

Earlier this month, Chow announced his decision not to contest the state party elections held on Sunday to pave the way for new leadership.

Lim called the convention “historic” due to Chow’s decision not to contest in the Penang DAP elections after 25 years as state chairman since 1999.

"We want to express our deepest appreciation to Chow for his service and sacrifice.

"He has served the party he loves since 1986 when he became the Political Secretary to the then DAP secretary-general Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang.

"His leadership is greatly appreciated, especially in strengthening this party in Penang.

"In 1999, he was appointed as Penang DAP Chairman, and in 2008, under his leadership, DAP managed to win 19 seats, forming the state government," she shared.

Lim said Penang DAP's success has not been an easy journey, with challenging moments from lack of funds to having to knock on doors to campaign.

"However, Chow's spirit never faded and under his leadership, DAP has created many opportunities for young people in the party to emerge as leaders and representatives," she said.

Following her speech, Lim invited the audience to watch a video showcasing Chow's prolific political career and leadership in the party.
