PUTRAJAYA: A man believed to be the main suspect working with a syndicate to bring foreigners through a “special counter” at Kuala Lumpur International Airport has been arrested.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days until Sept 28 after Magistrate Mohd Sabri Ismail allowed the application submitted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Shah Alam Magistrate Court on Sunday (Sept 22).
According to sources, the man in his 40s was believed to be in cahoots with syndicates that bring in foreigners via KLIA1 and KLIA2.
The suspect was earlier detained by Negri Sembilan MACC and remanded until Sept 23.
“Subsequently, the suspect was brought to the Selangor MACC on Saturday as they too are investigating him,” said the source.
Selangor MACC chief Datuk Alias Salim confirmed the arrest, saying that the suspect is being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the Immigration Act.
On Sept 18, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that graft busters have detained 60 people, including a senior Immigration officer believed to be the mastermind of a “counter setting” syndicate operating at KLIA.
Counter-setting refers to foreigners who enter the country without proper document inspections being made to go through designated and pre-determined lanes at entry points.
Azam said that 37 investigation papers had been opened and graft investigators had recorded statements from 95 individuals.
