PM: Kedah gets RM13mil flood aid


ALOR SETAR: An allocation of RM13mil will be given to Kedah as post-flood assistance to be used for channelling aid, cleaning efforts and repairing infrastructure damaged by the disaster, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) and the Kedah State Secretary’s Office had been directed to coordinate assistance to ensure prompt action and delivery.

He said the Federal Government had also allocated RM1,000 through Nadma and another RM1,000 through ICU for each head of household whose families were affected by the floods.

“We have started delivering direct aid to the flood victims.

“What is important is that we need to assess the damage, loss of livestock and damage to crops so that we can ease the burden faced by those affected,” he said to reporters after visiting a flood relief centre at SMK Agama Kedah yesterday, Bernama reported.

The Prime Minister also directed ongoing flood mitigation projects in Kedah to be closely monitored to prevent delays.

Expressing satisfaction with the flood management in Kedah, Anwar commended federal and state agencies for handling the disaster responsibly.

On another matter, the Prime Minister said the Education Ministry would determine the school session for schools in Kedah affected by the floods or being used as flood relief centres.

He said the ministry would consider offering flexibility to the affected schools, including granting additional holidays for students.

“For the Form 5 school session, it will be maintained, but for schools used as relief centres, the ministry will issue a statement, giving some flexibility, like additional holidays for students.

“But I must stress that it is not a holiday.

“Even if you can’t go to school, teachers must ensure students complete their homework before school reopens,” he said.

The school session in Kedah is scheduled to begin today after the week-long mid-term holiday.

However, due to floods, 37 schools in six districts have been converted into PPS.

Aside from the relief centre at SMK Agama Kedah, the Prime Minister also visited relief centres set up at Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium and SK Titi Gajah.
