Army man killed while platoon resting during training in Sibu


SIBU: An army personnel was shot and killed in the Song district while his platoon was resting during training exercises.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Army Command Public Relations Cell, the soldier was part of a company from the 9th Brigade in Sibu, conducting training in the Song district along the Kanowit-Nanga Dap-Song route from Sept 21 to 29.

"The platoon was resting when they heard the sound of a motorcycle passing through a trail near their location at about 2:45am. Shortly after, what they believed to be a gunshot rang out in the direction of the motorcycle. Suspicious of the sound, a perimeter inspection was conducted, during which a personnel member who had been injured by gunfire was discovered,” the statement said on Monday (Sept 23).

The injured soldier received first aid at the incident location before being rushed to the Song Health clinic at 4am and subsequently referred to Kapit Hospital for further treatment at about 5 am.

He was confirmed dead at 7:43am at Kapit Hospital due to his injuries, and a police report regarding the incident was lodged.

The Army stated that funeral arrangements will be made after the autopsy is completed, and the victim’s next-of-kin, who are in Sarikei, have been notified.

The Army also expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and reminded the public not to share any photos or information about the incident out of respect for the family and due to the ongoing investigation.

When contacted by Bernama on Monday, Song district police chief DSP Rowney Michael Jalak identified the personnel involved as Petrus Linggi Liman, 29. He also noted that the police received a call about the shooting at 2:45am and are tracking down the suspect. - Bernama
