JOHOR BARU: Dengue cases in Johor increased 45.6% to 10,982 in the 38th epidemiological week (ME38), compared to 7,543 in the same period last year.
Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said of the 10,982 cases, 4,621 were in epidemic localities, and 6,361 were in non-epidemic localities.
“We have also recorded 174 cases during ME38 (Sept 15 to 21), an increase of 10.1% compared to the previous week of ME37 (Sept 8 to 14) with 158 cases.
“Johor Baru has contributed the most cases, with 120 dengue fevers recorded,” he said in a statement here on Monday (Sept 23).
He added that as of September 21 this year, 8,410 of the 10,982 cases were from the Johor Baru district.
He added that other districts, such as Kulai, Kluang, Kota Tinggi and Pontian, have also recorded a slight increase in ME38 compared to ME37, while Mersing has zero cases.
“The activity of destroying breeding sites (PTP) continues to be carried out by health officers both inside and outside homes.
“The discovery of breeding sites and areas at risk of breeding inside homes indicates that the public is still not fully aware of the need for cleaning and eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds, particularly for Aedes mosquitoes,” he said.
Ling added that enforcement activities have resulted in the issuance of 4,630 fines, amounting to a total of RM2.3mil. Of this amount, 65% of the fines have been paid.
On COVID-19, Ling said 50 cases were recorded in ME38, a slight drop from the previous week's 62 cases in ME37.
