Johor housing scheme may go national

KLUANG: A study on Johor’s Rumah Transit Bangsa Johor model is being carried out by the Federal Government for potential expansion to other states, aiming to assist the public, especially low-income groups and young families, to own their own homes, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said that at present, only the Johor government provides the facility to rent houses, where a portion of the rental payment is set aside as savings towards the deposit for a future home purchase.

“We will study what has been done in Johor. If a proposal to bring this matter to the Cabinet is made, it will definitely receive my support,” he said after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Taman Kluang Perdana (Fasa 3A) affordable homes project here yesterday.

Ahmad Zahid said the initiative, along with the Housing and Local Government’s rent-to-own programme, would be especially helpful to the young people.

“It should be applied to other states as well, especially in urban areas,” he said.

The initiative, known as Johor Transit Housing Programme or Rumah Transit Bangsa Johor was introduced by the state government last year.

Under the initiative, 30% of the rent paid by those who rent the houses, is kept for them to use to purchase a house in the future.

To date, some 538 units of the transit homes have been built, and there are five ongoing projects statewide.
