Man charged with murder of former GP rider Elly


KANGAR: A contractor has been charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with the murder of former Moto3 and Cub Prix national racer Elly Idzlianizar Ilias (pic) two weeks ago.

Ibrahim Johan, 51, was charged with committing the offence at the junction of Taman Behor Gonchar Jaya between 10.30pm on Sept 10, and 12.01am the following day.

The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides the death penalty or minimum jail of 30 years, and if not sentenced to death, the offender must be punished with no less than 12 strokes of the rotan.

Ibrahim nodded when the charge was read before Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor. No plea was recorded as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court, Bernama reported.

No bail was allowed. Mention was set for Dec 30 for submission of relevant documents.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Po’ad while the accused was represented by counsel Tan Yen Sing.

Elly, 40, made a name for himself at the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2009 and won various races with manufacturers Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki.
