No reports lodged with MCMC over GISB parody videos, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has not received any reports over several parody videos related to GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISB), says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said MCMC would, however, take the necessary action should it receive any instructions from the police.

"I believe there are at least seven or eight versions of the original video circulating, at least those the ones I am aware of.

"There are choir versions, rock versions, and many others, which demonstrate how creative Malaysians can be.

"For now, the MCMC has not taken any action or removed any content indirectly related to GISB.

"From an investigative standpoint, it will take action by removing the content from all social media platforms if it receives instructions from the police," he told a press conference at the ministry here on Wednesday (Sept 25).

Recently, videos of several individuals singing songs related to the banned sect Al-Arqam and its spiritual leader Ashaari Mohammad, also known as Abuya, went viral on social media.

Since then, several parody versions of the clips have also surfaced and gained traction.

Al-Arqam, founded by Ashaari in 1968, was banned by the government in 1994 following concerns over its deviant teachings and its potential to disrupt social order.

The sect then rebranded, first as Rufaqa Corporation following the 1994 ban, and later as GISB.

The government has continued to monitor the movement, suspecting it of perpetuating the banned ideology under the guise of legitimate business ventures.

On Sept 11, police raided 20 care homes linked to GISB in Selangor and Negri Sembilan and rescued 402 children and teenagers suspected of being victims of child labour and sexual exploitation.

The police operation, dubbed Ops Global, uncovered cases of alleged neglect and abuse, leading to the arrest of several individuals connected to GISB.

On a related note, Fahmi said Wednesday's Cabinet meeting also touched on the issue, with Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri briefing it on the condition of the rescued children.
