Break-in suspect shot dead

Police forced to open fire in self-defence while being attacked

GOMBAK: A suspect with over two dozen police records, including 10 for break-ins, was shot dead as he attempted to attack policemen in Kampung Baru Kundang, Rawang, according to the police. They added that he had reversed his vehicle into cars belonging to the police and a civilian.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said a task force from the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters was tracking down a suspect at 1.15am yesterday believed to be responsible for breaking into a shop in Damansara earlier.

“The police team stumbled upon the suspect in a MPV (multi- purpose vehicle) at Kampung Baru Kundang. The suspect was told to stop his vehicle but he refused to comply. Instead, he reversed his vehicle fast into a police car and a car parked nearby, endangering the police personnel,” he said yesterday.

This forced the police to open fire in self-defence, causing the suspect’s vehicle to swerve to the side of the road, said Comm Hussein.

“The suspect was hit and died at the scene,” he said, adding that the man was in his late 30s and had a criminal record of 26 offences including 10 for break-ins.The suspect, he said, was also previously held under the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca).

“We seized several items from the suspect’s vehicle, including three machetes, a cutter, an axe and a steel rod,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
