Sunway clinches nine trophies in sustainability awards

SUNWAY Group emerged as the top winner at The Star ESG Positive Impact Awards 2023, which was held on Aug 21, taking home nine awards in recognition of its exemplary practice of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.

The awards ceremony saw guests of honour Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as well as the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry secretary-general Datuk Hairil Yahri Yaacob in attendance.

With 15 award categories in contention across mid-tier SMEs and large companies, Sunway received three Gold Awards and six Silver Awards, winning gold in the categories of “Energy Efficiency”, “Human Rights and Labour Standards” and “Good Health and Well-being”.

These accolades reflect Sunway’s full embrace of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and commitment to integrate sustainability and good governance into every aspect of its business operations.

Sunway Group executive director of chairman’s office Ong Pang Yen said, “At Sunway, we see the ESG disclosure and compliance framework as one of the more effective tools and as a means to an end, which is the SDGs. More importantly, we view ESG as a data-based sustainability mechanism that facilitates disclosures and fosters transparency.

“Our sustainability agenda is anchored on our values and ethics. Our commitment to the SDGs is a commitment to values and purpose. And our commitment to ESG is a commitment to transparency and accountability,” Ong added.

Sunway’s Energy Efficiency Gold Award win is a recognition of commitment to achieving Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.

As the first corporation in Malaysia to implement an internal carbon pricing framework across its business divisions, Sunway actively employs the use of renewable such as solar energy as well as low-carbon energy alternatives in its business operations, on top of expanding its portfolio nationwide which complies with its Green Township Policy and Green Building Policy.

For “Human Rights and Labour Standards”, Sunway was lauded for its commitment to advancing fundamental human rights, championing equal opportunities and responsible labour practices, as well as fostering diversity, equity and inclusion across all business divisions though a holistic human rights framework aligned with international human rights standards.

This includes regular due diligence, a transparent grievance mechanism, a transformative occupational health and safety management system, comprehensive risk management and zero tolerance to child labour.

In “Good Health and Well-being”, Sunway was recognised for the priority placed on health initiatives, family-friendly policies and work-life integration.

Some of these programmes include complimentary health talks delivered by Sunway Medical Centre specialists every month; dedicated 24/7 assistance hotline operated by clinical psychologists; as well as partial tuition and childcare fee subsidies.

Alongside Sunway’s three Gold Awards received at The Star ESG Positive Impact Awards 2023, Sunway had also secured six Silver Awards in “Water Management and Efficiency”, “Renewable Energy”, “Talent Management”, “Governance, Reporting and Transparency” and “Supply Chain Management”, as well as in “Innovative Partnerships” through its REIT arm.
