Teen drowns in tragic lake outing near Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: A day out with friends took a tragic turn when a 14-year-old boy drowned in a 4-metre-deep lake near here.

Officials from the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said the incident occurred near the Menggatal Residence at around midday on Friday (Sept 27).

Lintas Fire Station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi reported that a group of over 20 students from SMK Tebobon were on a day trip to the lake.

As the students were engaged in their activities, two of them—Adi Iskandar Abdullah and Hazwi Danial A. Rashid, both aged 14—began to struggle in the water.

“Adi was rescued when his friends found him and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him while waiting for medical assistance to arrive,” she said in a statement.

Unfortunately, Hazwi could not be located.

Firefighters received a distress call at around 12.44pm and a team was dispatched to the scene.

The boy’s body was recovered from the lake at approximately 2.48pm, about three metres underwater, Agustavia said, adding that medical officials at the scene pronounced him dead.

The body was taken to the hospital for a post-mortem examination and operations at the site concluded at 2.53pm.
