Tourism Minister calls for special meeting on hotel check-in policy

PETALING JAYA: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (pic) has instructed his ministry to urgently convene a special meeting regarding the hotel check-in policy issue.

“I have directed the ministry to immediately arrange a special meeting with all relevant parties, particularly hotel industry operators, as soon as I return to Malaysia. This meeting is to thoroughly discuss the issue and ensure a fair solution that does not burden customers,” he said in a statement on Friday (Sept 27).

Tiong is currently representing Malaysia at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation meeting.

He emphasised that his priority is to align hotel practices and policies with consumer interests while maintaining a competitive and sustainable hospitality industry.

“I would like to assure you that the ministry will take immediate and effective action in addressing this issue. The views and suggestions of all relevant stakeholders will be considered in the decision-making process to ensure that Malaysia’s hospitality industry remains competitive and customer-friendly,” he added.

The minister acknowledged public concern raised on social media and by the media, following recent reports of some hotels implementing a check-in time of 4pm and a check-out time of 11am, which many have criticised as unfair to customers due to the reduced length of stay.
