IPOH: About 700 volunteers took part in the national World Clean-up Day (WDC) celebration at Taman Seri Raia, near here.
The participants arrived as early as 7.15am to engage in a large-scale environmental clean-up, which was also held concurrently in other districts nationwide.
Perak housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng said about 20 communities within the administration of the Batu Gajah District Council took part in the activity in their respective areas.
"In line with that, the Housing and Local Government Ministry has requested all 156 local authorities in Malaysia to organise this large-scale cleaning event simultaneously as part of World Clean-up Day 2024.
"We expect this initiative to foster a culture of cleanliness within communities and create lasting change," she said during the launch of the programme on Saturday (Sept 28).
"It is a historic moment as it is happening nationwide at the same time," she said.
The United Nations (UN) has designated Sept 20 as World Clean-up Day, an annual global effort aimed at raising awareness of public cleanliness.
This year’s celebration aligns with Malaysia’s national goals for sustainability and public well-being.
Ng said among the activities carried out during the event includes gotong-royong, aerobic exercises, counters to encourage e-waste segregation and e-waste collection and area cleaning.
"I hope this event can be held annually given the good response from the community.
"I hope that the ministry will go on to hold this programme as a reminder for citizens on the importance of a cleaner environment," she added.
