Army personnel drowns after boat hit by log near Linggiu Dam


KOTA TINGGI: A 32-year-old Army personnel tragically drowned in the Linggiu Dam, Bandar Tenggara, Kota Tinggi, in the early hours of Saturday (Sept 28).

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the police received a call at 2.35am regarding the incident.

"The victim, along with three other Armed Forces personnel, was on duty at the dam when the boat they were in struck what is believed to be a floating log, causing all four to be thrown overboard.

"While the three other soldiers managed to swim to safety, the victim did not resurface.

"The survivors searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate their comrade, prompting them to inform their superior," he said in a statement here.

Emergency response teams from Bandar Tenggara police station, Fire and Rescue personnel from Kota Tinggi and Bandar Tenggara, as well as the Fire Department’s Scuba Unit, were immediately dispatched to conduct a search and rescue operation.

The victim was found at 11.50am by the Scuba Unit, submerged at a depth of 13 metres and approximately seven metres from the site of the incident.

"The body was retrieved and transported to the Forensic Unit of Kota Tinggi Hospital for further investigation," he added.

The case has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR).
