Police record Akmal's statement over halal certification issue

JASIN: Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh turned up at the police headquarters here to record his statement following a police report lodged by Sarawak DAP.

The Umno Youth chief was accompanied by three lawyers on Sunday (Sept 29) morning and left after an hour.

Dr Muhamad Akmal, who is also Merlimau assemblyman, said he provided his statement regarding the halal certification issue.

"I have provided my statement. My response is that sensitive matters shouldn't be touched on by any party in a bid to maintain harmony," he said.

Dr Muhamad Akmal also said his statement was in response to Teresa Kok's remarks.

He added that he was prepared to face anyone who wishes to challenge him in court over the issue.

On Sept 12, Sarawak DAP filed a police report on Dr Muhamad Akmal's remarks, alleging that it could cause racial division.

The police report referred to a Dr Muhamad Akmal Facebook post urging DAP to "educate" Kok on proper conduct as her remarks regarding the halal certification issue had drawn criticism.

Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Jamil Radzi confirmed that Dr Muhamad Akmal was summoned to provide a statement.

"We are not opening any investigation paper as we are only assisting our Sarawak counterparts to take the statement," he said.
