Report abuse and seek help in emergencies instead of recording it for clout, says KK MP

KOTA KINABALU: In cases of abuse or emergencies, it would be better to seek help and lodge a police report first instead of recording the incidents for content purposes, said Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

“This is not right. Do not just record videos for your content. Call the Welfare Department or the cops,” the Kota Kinabalu MP said when officiating at the Kota Kinabalu level Child Protection Advocacy Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Tun Fuad here, Saturday (Sept 28).

Chan said there have been reports of child abuse and neglect every day.

“These cases we read and hear about comprise sexual, physical, mental and emotional abuse. This is a form of violence to children and a violation of their rights,” he said.

Chan said adults in this country are responsible for ensuring that children grow up healthy and safe because these children will steer and lead the country in the future.

He urged the public to be more concerned about their surroundings and people around them and report any suspicion of abuse.

“The number to call is (Talian Kasih) 15999, or you can send WhatsApp messages to 019-2615999,” he said, adding that children can also do so if they know of their friends, siblings or relatives being abused.

Chan said children should not be afraid to voice their fears and concerns and protect themselves from harm, even at home.

He said advocacy programmes such as the Child Protection Advocacy Programme help raise awareness on this issue and should be held more often.
