KLUANG: Mahkota’s newly elected assemblyman will focus on bringing more programmes and initiatives to help those in the B40 category and ensuring that the state government’s plans for his constituency run smoothly.
Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, who won the Mahkota seat, said he wants to ensure that the issues shared with him during the recently concluded election receive attention.
“Among issues that the people of Mahkota had highlighted to me include the high cost of living, especially for those in the B40 category.
“Many are in need of assistance to cope, and I hope to be able to come out with programmes that are catered to those in the B40 category and support existing initiatives by the state government,” he told the press when met after meeting with the people of Mahkota here on Sunday (Sept 29).
Syed Hussien said that he would also work with the state and federal government to mitigate and address flash flood issues in the constituency.
“Another key issue that I want to focus on is housing. I would ensure that ongoing projects for affordable houses reach the target that the state government has set.
“By the year 2026, we should be able to see at least 80% of these projects completed. I believe this is an attainable goal as the state government has also been very consistent in its policies,” he said, adding that he is expected to be sworn in as the Mahkota assemblyman on Thursday (Oct 3).
The Mahkota state seat became vacant when its assemblyman, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain from Umno, passed away on Aug 2.
Sharifah Azizah won the seat in the March 2022 Johor state election by a 5,166-winning majority, beating three other candidates from Perikatan, Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan.
On Saturday (Sept 28), Syed Hussien, who is also Kluang Umno youth chief, won the election after securing 27,995 votes, while Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan received 7,348.
Voter turnout for the by-election was at 53.84%, which is slightly lower compared to the 57.34% turnout for the seat during the state election in 2022.
