SEPANG: The online shift has led to numerous career possibilities but job seekers need to keep up with changes, says Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting.
The guest professor of Xiamen University said new trends have been created with the rise of freelancing, digital nomadism and increased focus on sustainability as well as ethical consumption.
He called on new graduates to equip themselves with the ability to navigate the “onslaught” of technological advances, embrace new ways of doing business, and remain agile in the face of changes.
“Lifestyle changes have closely followed technological advancements. People are more connected than ever before through social media, digital communication tools and smart devices.
“Staying relevant in this fast-changing world means continuously evolving, mastering new technologies, and fostering a mindset of resilience and adaptability.
“Ultimately, those who can embrace the rapid pace of innovation and leverage technology to drive positive change will be well-positioned to succeed in the careers of tomorrow,” he said.
Ong was addressing new graduates during the second ceremony of Xiamen University Malaysia’s (XMUM) sixth convocation here yesterday.
In his speech, the former housing and local government minister also encouraged the graduates to carry forward the spirit of curiosity, resilience and compassion that has brought them this far.
Meanwhile, Chok Yi Kee, 23, from Shah Alam, who graduated with a Bachelor in Advertising, said she might explore other avenues like marketing to enrich her working experience.
Wong Xin Yao, 22, from Ipoh, hopes to find employment soon in the diverse field of advertising.
“I want to gain as much experience as I can in this field,” she said.
Five ceremonies of XMUM’s six convocation are being held this weekend for the graduating class of 2024.
This year, XMUM’s Bachelor’s degree programmes in artificial intelligence, physics, and English language and literature presented their first cohort of graduates.
A total of 1,419 students – 804 Malaysian and 615 international – from 19 undergraduate and five postgraduate programmes are graduating this year.
