KUALA LUMPUR: The government will need to spend between RM700mil and RM1bil to resolve Internet issues in universities and polytechnics, says Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir.

”The funds are needed to upgrade Internet facilities and replace obsolete equipment,” he told reporters after the annual general meeting of Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party here on Sunday (Sept 29).

He said both the Higher Education Ministry and Communication Ministry met for discussions this week.

“The universities have given their approval to install communication towers and systems to improve the communication infrastructure.

“This has been finalised between the two ministries and involves a significant amount around RM700mil to RM1bil for universities and polytechnics,” he added.

This comes following instructions from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Higher Education Ministry to solve Internet connectivity issues in public higher education institutions promptly.
