BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man, who was filmed dragging his dog along the road as he was driving his car, has apologised for his act.

Central Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Helmi Aris said the man filed a report on the matter, claiming it was unintentional.

"We received a report at 12.24am on Sunday from the man," he said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 29).

ACP Helmi said in the report, the man said he was alerted by a road user, who informed that a dog was tied to the rear of his vehicle while he stopped at a traffic light in Jalan Kulim around 8pm on Saturday (Sept 28).

"The man said he quickly got down to check.

"He contacted his wife, who told him that his brother-in-law had tied the dog to prevent it from loitering near a neighbour's house.

"The man admitted to his carelessness and said he had no intention of abusing the dog," added ACP Helmi, adding that the man – the registered owner of the canine – has since apologised.

He said the man was unaware that his dog had been tied to the back of his car when he drove out to a nearby shop, thus dragging the pet along the road.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

The dog is receiving treatment at a veterinary clinic for the injuries sustained in the incident.

The case has been referred to the Penang Veterinary Department for investigation under Section 29(1)E of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
