SEOUL: Malaysia will explore the use of different spectrums and frequencies, similar to those employed in South Korea, to address the issue of internet coverage within buildings, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi noted that the effectiveness of this method has been validated in South Korea, which previously faced similar challenges.
“They (LG U+) informed me of a solution that involves a single frequency and spectrum. I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to examine the findings and recommendations from LG U+. If it proves suitable, we will work on a proof-of-concept,” he stated in an interview with Bernama on Monday (Sept 30).
Earlier, Fahmi met with LG U+ Executive vice president Johan Sue-hyun Chung and senior officials from the telecommunications company, where he attended a briefing on the status of 5G network coverage in South Korea. Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng was also present.
Fahmi was briefed on an artificial intelligence (AI) application developed by LG U+ designed to assist users in answering phone calls and detecting potential fraud.
Additionally, he visited the LG Sciencepark, the largest research and study complex in South Korea, where he observed the company’s innovations in the automotive and logistics sectors utilising AI technology.
Fahmi also urged Telekom Malaysia (TM) and LG U+ to explore potential collaborations for the implementation of 5G, particularly for local companies in the industrial and enterprise sectors.
Founded in 1996, LG U+ is a leading South Korean telecommunications company recognised for its advanced 5G, broadband and IoT solutions.
Fahmi is currently on a three-day working visit to South Korea, during which he will deliver a keynote address at the GSMA Mobile 360 APAC conference, explore new collaboration opportunities in the film industry and meet with telecommunications executives to gather insights related to connectivity. - Bernama
