Taxi driver falls victim to Macau scam, loses RM141,000

KLUANG: A 67-year-old taxi driver lost RM141,000 to a Macau scam where the scammer impersonated a police officer.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the police received a report from the victim on Sept 25.

"The incident began on Aug 29 when the victim received a phone call from an unknown individual.

"The caller claimed to be a police officer and accused the victim of being involved in 16 criminal cases.

"He was then instructed to create a new bank account and transfer all his money, totalling RM141,000, into it," ACP Bahrin said in a statement on Monday (Sept 30).

He added that the victim lodged the police report after being unable to contact the suspect.

“The victim confirmed with the bank that all the money had been withdrawn on Sept 26.

"The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

"We urge the public to be cautious when receiving calls from unknown numbers and to stay updated on the latest scam tactics by following the police’s social media channels," he advised.
