KUALA LUMPUR: A factory worker pleaded guilty in the High Court on Monday to three charges related to the Daesh terrorist group, including possession of items associated with the group and providing support to it.
Suhaini Sarwan, 46, made the confession after the charges were read before Judge Datuk Noorin Badaruddin. The court has set October 16 for judgment to allow the defence time to submit an appeal.
According to the first charge, Suhaini was accused of possessing items related to the Daesh terrorist group on two mobile phones in the Kempas Industrial Estate, Johor Bahru, on May 30 at 1:15pm. This charge was framed under paragraph 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison or a fine, along with confiscation of property used or intended for the offence.
For the second and third charges, Suhaini was charged with providing support to Daesh via the social media application Facebook under the names 'Suhaini Sarwan' and 'Enma Kenma' at the Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division (E8), Royal Malaysia Police headquarters in Bukit Aman, at 5:50pm on May 27.
These charges fall under paragraph 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which can lead to a prison sentence of up to 40 years, a fine and confiscation of property used in the offence.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim requested the court to set another date for legal proceedings, as the lawyer from the Legal Aid Department did not attend court on Monday (Sept 30). He also noted that the accused faces two additional charges, for which they plan to apply for transfer to this court.
