Students in Perak set new world record

A TOTAL of 800 Tamil school students in Perak set a new world record by reciting the Thirukkural in 30 seconds, Makkal Osai repor ted.

The Thirukkural is a collection of Tamil verses written by ancient Indian sage Thiruvalluvar.

The record was set at a Thirukkural recitation competition held at the Kinta Teachers Training College in Ipoh.

The event was jointly organised by the Community and Education Development Association and the state Tamil School Headmasters Association.

Organising committee chairman Manivannan Kandasamy said 86 of the 134 Tamil schools in the state participated in the competition.

Tamil School Headmasters Association president Pazhani Suppiah said the event was intended to introduce and popularise the Thirukkural in the community. He added that they were looking to make it an annual competition.

The organisers also thanked Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, who provided RM20,000 in funding to support the event.
