Man loses over RM100,000 in online car sale scam

SIBU: A man thought he had struck a good deal for a four-wheel drive vehicle but ended up losing RM106,680 in an online car sale scam.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the 40-year-old victim saw the vehicle for sale in a Facebook post.

"He called the number listed and was told it was 2023-registered 4WD vehicle for sale at RM97,800 with a five-year payment plan of RM1,630 per month," said ACP Zulkipli.

To further entice the victim, the suspect lowered the price to RM85,000.

The victim then agreed and submitted his wife's personal information, a photocopy of her identity card and a picture of her driving license to the suspect.

"He then transferred RM106,680 in 24 transactions into four different accounts," he said.

The suspect later asked the victim to transfer another RM7,800, supposedly for "delivery charges".

At that point, the victim realised he had been conned and filed a police report on Tuesday (Sept 1).

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
