MOH to enforce law on smoking products prudently

PUTRAJAYA: With the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 coming into force, the Health Ministry (MOH) has assured the people that it will take prudent and reasonable measures in enforcing the law (Act 852).

“MOH enforcement officers will take a prudent approach so that those involved in this industry understand that we are doing all this for the good health of the younger generation,” said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad yesterday.

He was speaking to the media after the MOH 2024 Senior Citizens’ Day celebration here, Bernama reported.

Gazetted on Feb 2, Act 852 came into force yesterday.

Dzulkefly said there are two aspects in its implementation, immediately and through enforcement of education, so that there is an atmosphere of mutual respect for the law and rights, especially in the sale of electronic cigarettes or vape products to minors.

He said among the challenges are age identification as well as the difficulty in ensuring that individuals who buy tobacco products are not minors.

Immediate enforcement that started yesterday will be on the sale of smoking products in the form of games that attract children and teenagers. It is aimed at curbing the availability of these products.
