Yayasan PETRONAS, Sabah Forestry collaborate to restore Kungkular Forest


KOTA KINABALU: Yayasan PETRONAS and the Sabah Forestry Department launched the Kungkular Forest Reserve Restoration Programme in Sabah interior Tenom to rehabilitate 185 hectares of degraded forest.

The programme involves tree planting, knowledge and skills sharing, site preparation, nurseries, maintenance, and sustainability planning with the cooperation of the communities of Kampung Kungkular, Kampung Nanturaan, Kampung Lohot, and Kampung Sosopon.

Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests Indra Purwandita Herry Sunjoto launched the programme

on Friday (Sept 27).

Kemabong assemblyman Datuk Rubin Balang, Tenom MP Riduan Rubin and Yayasan PETRONAS chief executive officer Shariah Nelly Francis witnessed it.

According to a Yayasan PETRONAS statement on Wednesday (Oct 2), the partnership grew during the Heart of Borneo International Conference 2023 in Kota Kinabalu.

The programme is part of Yayasan PETRONAS’ initiatives to plant one million trees across Malaysia and its Planting Tomorrow initiative.

Shariah Nelly said 948 residents from 202 households would participate in the programme's agroforestry activities, which are part of a long-term effort to build community resilience through nature-based solutions.

The programme would be carried out in cooperation with the state Agriculture Department, Veterinary Services Department and Fisheries Department.
