KUCHING: Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki has been appointed the new chairman of Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) effective Oct 1.
He takes over from Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi, who had chaired the company since 2005.
"Ibrahim brings over three decades of experience across industries such as property development, shipping and media," SEB said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 3).
A legal professional by training, Ibrahim began his career as a legal officer at PETRONAS in 1984 before co-founding a law firm in Sarawak.
He also serves as a non-independent non-executive director of PETRONAS.
SEB said Abdul Hamed left behind a legacy of guiding the company's transformation into a leading regional player in renewable energy and sustainability.
"Under his leadership, Sarawak Energy expanded from a traditional utility with 2,042 employees and a generation capacity of 849MW in 2005 to over 6,000 employees and a capacity of 5,745MW today.
"During his tenure, the company achieved 99.5% electrification across the state, up from 80% in 2009," it said.
SEB also extended its gratitude to Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, who served as its independent non-executive director from 2010 until Aug 1 this year.
"His expertise and insights, particularly from his extensive experience in leading multinational organisations in the energy sector, have been integral to Sarawak Energy’s successful transformation into a key player in renewable energy development and international ventures," the company said.
