LANGKAWI: After a seven-month “makeover”, Dataran Lang here, which features the famed statue of the Brahminy Kite, is open to visitors again.“The eagle statue is freshly painted.

The fountain area, another key attraction at Dataran Lang, underwent repairs and the upgrading of pumps created a more vibrant water display,” said Langkawi Development Authority chief executive officer Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid.

This means that visitors to the area where the eagle statue sits will have access to a better fountain system, lighting and public amenities.

Haslina said the project began on Feb 28 and was completed about seven months later on Sept 16.

“The revamped Dataran Lang was opened a day after the upgrading works were completed,” she said. She said Dataran Lang has long been a popular tourist destination. In recognition of its significance, the local authority initiated a comprehensive refurbishment to maintain its charm while ensuring the longevity of its structures.

Other work being done is the upgrading of electrical infrastructure around the area, with new lighting being installed to enhance the visual appeal of the site after sunset.

She said the project focused on upgrading and maintaining existing features, preserving the historical and cultural merits of the site while enhancing its functionality and aesthetics.

“It can also be an event space because of the scenic location and its enhanced amenities make it an ideal spot to have festivals, cultural events and other gatherings that celebrate Langkawi’s rich heritage and vibrant community life,” she added.

The name Dataran Lang is derived from the Malay words “helang” (eagle) and “kawi” (reddish brown stone).

Dataran Lang is the site of Langkawi’s iconic 12m-tall eagle statue, built in 1996.

It covers a total space of almost 8ha comprising terraces, ponds, footbridges and pavilions.
