ARTISANS in India took two weeks to custom weave a wedding saree with 200g of gold woven into it, Makkal Osai reported.
The order for the traditional silk saree, which cost 1.2 million rupees (RM60,000), came in for the wedding of a businessman’s daughter in Hyderabad city.
According to saree maker Vijaya Kumar, there is a wide range of prices for these outfits.
The costlier ones could go up to tens of thousands of ringgit depending on the material and manufacturing method.
As for the custom-made saree, he said it posed a unique challenge to the saree maker.
The handloom weaving of the gold threads, which was made with a novel method using silk, took six months from start to finish.
The end product came out to be a 5.5m saree weighing roughly 900g.
Such special occasions are a dream come true for artisans to show their passion and artistry in saree making, Vijaya Kumar said.
