JPA reminds civil servants not to make public statements, including on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: All civil servants have been reminded to refrain from making any public statements, including on social media, unless authorised by their respective ministries or departments.

This reminder was posted on the Public Services Department’s (JPA) Facebook page by Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. It was issued under the 2024 Prime Minister’s Department’s administrative meeting.

"If found guilty and in violation of any regulation in effect, disciplinary action can be taken against the civil servant," Shamsul Azri said in the post.

He emphasised that civil servants are prohibited from making public statements that could harm the government's policies, plans, or decisions, or bring embarrassment or discredit to the government, whether verbally or in writing.

This prohibition is clearly outlined under Regulation 19(1) and 19(2) of the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993.
