Kedah floods: Seven relief centres open, 199 victims evacuated


ALOR SETAR: A total of 199 victims from 66 families have been evacuated to seven temporary relief centres (PPS) in Baling when floods hit several villages in the district on Thursday (Oct 3).

Kedah Civil Defence Force deputy director Major Mohd Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the PPS that were activated in the district on Oct 3 were SK Siong,SK Bayu, SK Tanjung Pari, Dewan Kampung Banggol Deram, and SMK Parit Panjang.

"The PPS that were opened on Friday (Oct 4) were Surau Kampung Lahar and Surau Albarakah Tembak B," he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 4).

Mohd Suhaimi said the evacuees that were involved in the evacuation were from Kampung Charuk Bakap, Kampung Parit Panjang, Kampung Tembak B, Kampung Baru, Kampung Pokok Setol, Kampung Depan Sekolah, Kampung Siput, Kampung Batu 60, Kampung Tanjung Pari, Kampung Simpang 3 Sik Jalan Weng, Kampung Banggol Deram, Kampung Bukit Sebelah, Kampung Lahar.

"Residents in high-risk areas such as Baling must always be prepared for flooding and be alert if there is a sudden rise in water levels," he said.

As of 9am, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage’s Public Infobanjir website reported that Sungai Ketil in Baling has exceeded dangerous water levels.
